What are the Homeless Pets Clubs?

The Etowah Valley Humane Society (EVHS) would like to introduce the concept of Homeless Pets Clubs.

This project began as an idea by noted veterinarian, Dr. Michael Good, who received a Harvard-based grant to implement a program that would significantly reduce the incidence of euthanasia in the Metropolitan Atlanta area. Dr. Good, with his vast experience in the veterinary field and keen foresight into the future of animal well being, recognized the urgent need to be pro-active in addressing the plight of pet overpopulation.

It is with this vision in mind that Homeless Pets Clubs was born. Homeless Pets Clubs will be catalysts in educating the younger generation in responsible pet ownership and creating an awareness of the proliferation of unwanted pets. Under the guidance of EVHS and a club sponsor (teacher), the clubs will introduce their members to animals currently residing at our local Shelter. The members will "sponsor" animals from EVHS and use their own contacts to help find "forever" homes for these "Homeless Pets".

By taking an active role in the adoption process, the kids will gain pride, self-esteem and feel a sense of accomplishment as well as enhancing such important traits as communication and social interaction. After all, kids are our future pet owners and, hopefully, will pass along their knowledge to subsequent generations. In addition, the parents are sure to become involved as a by-product of this association.

Dr. Good has appointed the Etowah Valley Humane Society to be the FIRST humane society in the nation to participate! This is indeed a great honor! But it will take a collaborative effort on the part of EVHS, the schools, and the community at large to fulfill Dr. Good's dream and the hope of animal lovers everywhere to eventually make our Community, the great State of Georgia, and the ENTIRE nation "no-kill"!

But Homeless Pets Clubs aren’t just limited to grade schools. Any business, Church, civic, or social organization may get involved. Please contact Bryan Canty, Director of EVHS, for more details on how to get your club started! Great things are happening at EVHS…come be a part!
