We adopted Max (formerly known to the shelter as Titus) in August 2008 as a companion for our German Shepherd Ellie that we had recently took in as a stray. Max is a very large long haired German Shepherd or Belgian Shepherd Tervuren. Max had a been at the shelter for almost 3 months when we adopted him, as the shelter wasn't willing to give up on finding him a home. It seems large dogs are often hard to adopt.
Max is a wonderful addition to our family and enjoys living in the house with Ellie and 4 cats. This gentle giant sleeps next to our bed every night. Who says a large dog doesn't make a good house dog?
Thank you for keeping Max long enough for him to find his forever home.
Thanks,
Artie and Marlene Beck
Thank you for saving these two pups! Without them our lives would not be as fulfilling and rewarding as it has been with the addition of Nellie and Molly.
My husband and I adopted Nellie just over 4 years ago. She is a Border Collie mix who we describe as "the perfect dog" and she truly is. She was a shy and submissive dog who was named Nellie by your group because she was terribly nervous and shaking when found on the road with a litter of puppies. It didn't take long for her to grow into her place in the world to become an outgoing and independent girl. She adores lots of attention, petting, sleeping in the sunlight, and going to doggie daycare to play (and herd) the other dogs.
Molly, a Blue Heeler mix, was the quiet and messy dog who, at only a year old, had already worn down her front teeth (presumably from nervous chewing) prior to adoption. She was covered in an itchy rash, had rough, furless patches where she had scratched herself, and a terrible cough. Still, I saw a sweet and loving dog that adoption day just 8 months ago. Through lots of medication and TLC, Molly recovered from her rash and pneumonia (it wasn't just kennel cough!), and regrew all her fur despite warnings by the Vet that it may not ever come back. Molly enjoys playing tug-of-war, chasing balls, wrestling with Nellie, and long hikes through the woods.
The photo I'm attaching is from our trip to the Outer Banks of NC where they had their first taste of the ocean and running along the sandy beaches. You can plainly see how happy and healthy they are.
THANK YOU for the wonderful dogs you had just waiting to come into our home. We can't imagine life without either one of these two pups!

We came in to look at one particular dog and ended up bringing Tinkerbell home instead. Her name belies her true nature. She is not dainty and delicate, but rather like a bull in a china shop. For a dog that spent the better part of her life in a shelter environment, she is adapting well to living in a house. Sometimes she flies across the coffee table, but mostly she minds her manners. She came into a home with much older dogs and this has required us to figure out how to adapt to her abundance of energy and puppy behavior. With an old dog and one needed housebreaking it's a good thing we're not too attached to our carpet. Tinkerbell has come light years in her obedience and house breaking. She's even managed to learn who's the boss when it comes to the cats. And, of course, the cats wasted no time putting her in her place. Tinkerbell now has a big, fenced backyard to romp around in. She enjoys playing catch and running after any little bug that captures her attention. Taking her evening walk is one of her favorite things. She's very good at night and settles in quickly in her crate. As a matter of fact, she goes right into it without even being told. What a good girl. Here is a picture of her graduation from dog obedience class. We look forward to many exciting years with Tinkerbell.

Just wanted to tell you how much we are enjoying our dog, Tucker, who we adopted from you in early August. He is such a good, sweet and trainable dog. We had a tough time at first with him being too aggressive with our kitten but now they are enjoying each other's company. He is such a great dog! We couldn't be happier!
God bless you for all you do!

One year ago today, the first Saturday in October 2007, I walked in to to the Etowah Valley Human Society with a picture of the saddest little girl. She didn't have a name she only had a number (luckily neither one of us remember that number). Dorothy didn't know anything about her, she was just picked up off of the streets. I was led in back with a leash so that I can meet her, She was in a kennel with 3 other boisterous dogs, sitting quietly looking sad and scared. I was allowed to take her out side for a little walk and she was so shy she didn't even look at me. When I was about to give up thinking that maybe she wasn't the right dog for me she rolled on her back and wanted me to rub her belly! I knew then that even though it would take work, I was taking this little girl home. It took 2 more visits for her to get excited to see me and the rest is, as they say, History. Our little Lilliput still loves her belly rubbed, her doggy treats (it took no time at all to get her to her ideal weight), trying to get her cat brother and sister to play, chasing squirrels and of course, long walks on the beach. We have since moved to St. Louis and Lilliput is a very popular girl at our local Dog Park.
Forever Grateful of Dorothy and The Etowah Valley Humane Society,
Lauren McIlvaine

Just wanted to tell you that Alvina (now called Jackie) has brought sooo much love to our family. I know she was used for breeding and left out to die. She has a chance to live to rest of her life not worring about anything. When I first saw her on your website I knew I had to see her. So we went and you brought her out she looked so sad and lonely. She jumped into my husband's lap and looked up into his eyes and put her paw on his chest and would have said "take me home" if she could. So we did, fur or no fur. She has a long road ahead with skin and fur. Now she is part of the family with our other chihuahuas.
So thank you guys so much!
Ann Marie Favalora adopted one of our scruffy little foster dogs and she now lives in Jefferson, LA (New Orleans area). Ann Marie lost so much in Katrina's wrath , but while rebuilding her life decided to give this little dog a 2nd chance for a happy, loving forever home.
She wrote this poem in honor of Libby's 1st Anniversary of her adoption. Keep out your Kleenex!
07/07/07 was most definitely the luckiest day
That's the day my Mommy saved me from being a stray.
Can you believe it's been a whole year since I arrived from the humane society?
What a special day for this little puppy!
I'm so glad they put me on Petfinder and Mommy searched that internet,
All the way from Georgia they flew me in on a big Delta jet
Independence Day had just passed,
And no one knew when my birthday was
because they never bothered to ask!
So when I arrived home so pretty as can be,
Mommy decided to name me after Lady Liberty
Since then I've learned so many things, and I have lots of puppy friends,
it's like my doggie fun never ends!
Maizey, Chloe, Hannah, and Buster, too,
Sure helped chase away my pound puppy blues
It's been a whole year now, and I'm spoiled as can be,
So instead of a birthday, we're celebrating my anniversary!

Update!
Just wanted to pass on a new picture! As you can probably tell, she wasn't too keen on her outfit, so we only left it on long enough to snap this picture!

We just wanted to thank everyone that cared for Linus (Chip) before we got him up to NY, and let you know he is doing great. Linus is a little devil, but we can over look most of his mischief because he is such a loveable little guy. He loves lots of attention and if he thinks he's not getting enough of it, he will find away to get it. He has adapted well and has put life back into our 10 year old schnauzer who was becoming lazy, but Linus won't leave him alone long enough for him to be lazy. Again Thanks from all of us!!!!!
Jackie, John, Linus and Raz!!

I just wanted to thank the Etowah Valley Humane Society for rescuing my dog, Sandi.
When we came to the shelter in November of 2007, my mom and I fell in love with a sweet spaniel mix who was in desperate need of a good home. She had been a stray, and her ribs poked through her 15 lb frame. Despite all this, she remained friendly and affectionate.
We've had Sandi for 10 months now. She's a healthy 38 1bs and her fur has restored its natural shine and beauty. She is such a joy--a wonderful companion and a great guard dog! We love her so much!
Thank you for all you do!

Just wanted you to know how blessed we feel to have found Prince and Princess Blondie. We are so in love with them. Blondie has a ways to go to get her coat the way it needs to be, so we will be working with Precious Paws on that. Prince is my baby. He sticks with me, and Princess more with Jordan, my daughter. They are amazing babies! Thanks for caring for them until GOD sent us your way. We will be keeping in touch on their progress.
Sincerely The Bakers

We lost our beloved dog Buddy in September of last year. Our other dog Cody was so lonely when his brother passed away. We came to Etowah to find Cody a companion. We were unsure about getting another dog so soon. Dorothy and Donna were very understanding and patient with us. Dorothy recommended Benny to us. We brought him home and Benny and Cody became fast friends. Benny and his big brother Cody are inseparable. They love each other so much. Benny is an absolute angel. He has brought so much joy into our lives. We love and adore him!! Thank you so much Dorothy and Donna for allowing Benny to become a part of our family. And thank you for everything you do. You are very special ladies.
Thank you so much,
Stephen, Marn, Cody & Benny

I wanted to share with you how much joy Chloe has brought to our lives. She is the most precious little girl in the world. She really has become more of my daughter's dog so I am sitting back being content telling everyone that I have a grandpuppy and she is the sweetest in the world! (when she's not chewing my shoes)
Dorothy, thank you so much for meeting with us and taking such good care of Chloe until we got there! Most important, thank you for working with different agencies that led me to you! A very heartfelt thank you to Annette at the Southern Hope Humane Society that shared our application and because of her dedication to the animals we were then led to Etowah Valley Humane. Our sincere thanks for EVERYTHING you do!
Much Love,
Michele & Jessie

Becoming a volunteer for Etowah Valley Humane Society has introduced me to so many beautiful, loving and smart cats and dogs that I truly hope find the forever families who will show them what family really means.
One mischievous cat in particular insisted on coming home with my husband and I. Who knows what havoc he would've caused in the Cat Room, had we not met his demands...
After a few weekends of getting to know him, Gremlin became my little 'helper'. My little elf, if you will. He'd follow me around the room quietly as I dished out the wet food for the cats in the Cat Room. He'd silently investigate in things, around things and on top of things (especially on top of things). After some careful consideration, we decided that Gremlin would be a fabulous brother for our two feline girls, Daisy and Delilah and we chose to bring him home. He has been a great fit and is still full of energy and mischief! He loves to chase his sisters and generally cause chaos but we love him and couldn't imagine our family without him.
We wish every day that we could bring each cat in the shelter home but how could we take all the fun!? Felines make fantastic family members and we wish and work every day to find the cats of Etowah Valley's Cat Room the loving homes they deserve.
Hannah and Grant Michalski.
She was pregnant when her owner's brought her in. They signed the consent to put her down and just left. The shelter had named her Clover. I went to look at her, and she was so cute, and sweet. When I brought her home she was extremely timid and hid under the bed for days. I could tell that she had been through quite a bit. Eventually she warmed up to me, and relaxed in her new environment. I recently got divorced, and had to start completely over. Sadie is the greatest thing I could have ever asked for. I named her Sadie. Now, when I come home from work she is right at the door waiting for me. She sits in the window and watches me leave for work. She is always by my side, and loves to play. Sadie will lick me on the forehead when it is time to get up. She is the sweetest cat that I have ever had. She always gives unconditional love despite what happened to her. She is a little weary of strangers, but warms up to people very fast. I am also going to adopt another cat for her to play with when I am not home. I couldn't be happier! She is exactly what I needed in the difficult stage my life was in.

Hi everyone,
I just want to thank Dorothy for taking the chance and allowing Mocha to come live with us in Michigan.
She was adopted 5/19/2008 from Etowa Valley GA and taken to Marne, MI. She has adjusted VERY well and is just the sweetest dog. She loves to romp about her new country estate with her two doggie friends Roxie (springer) and Cassie (the yellow lab) Both girls are teaching Mocha all kinds of new things. She chases birds and runs after squirrels and chipmunks. We are working on teaching Mocha to swim. She has been on a trip to Northern Michigan to see Lake Leelanau where we discovered that she did not know how to swim. But we'll find doggie swim classes for her.
After her first grooming she felt and acted so much better. Take a look at the before pictures (the rightmost 2) I really believe she loves her new home!! And we all just love her too. Mocha is truly a success story. It still amazes me we found such a fantastic dog in a shelter. She is now a part of the Marne Pack.
Enjoy the before and after pictures of this wonderful dog.
Thank you again,
Jane Bouwman
We named our little rat terrier Kelly that we got from you in February. She's up to 17 pounds. Kelly is on the left and Prissy (our first child) is on the right. They love to play together and Kelly is adjusting nicely to having a nice soft bed and a home of her own.
Thanks,
Pam
